U.S. bill prevents intelligence sharing with nations using Huawei
  • The lawmaker has introduced a bill to prohibit the region from sharing intelligence with the countries making use of the Huawei 5G networks.

  • In any case if the bill is ruled out, it may produce huge implications for the intelligence sharing relationship between the country and its nearest allies.

The United States Senator, Tom Cotton, recently introduced a bill which is expected to prevent the country from sharing the intelligence with the other countries that allow the operation of Chinese telecom giant, Huawei Technologies across the region.

As a vocal critic of the telecom giant, Cotton has proposed a noticed provision in a defense bill which was signed into law over a month ago. The law directs the intelligence agencies to consider the use of cybersecurity infrastructure and telecoms, apparently provided to them by the adversaries of the US, when entering into the intelligence sharing alliances with the foreign companies.

It has been claimed that if the bill is passed to become a part of the law, it could lead to unending repercussions for the intelligence-sharing connection between Washington and its close alliances, specially across the Europe. Moreover, revelation of bill comes just days ahead of the country’s decision to upgrade its telecom network with Huawei equipment.

The United States has led a worldwide campaign against the telecom operator professing that Huawei could spy on its customers for Beijing after the company was placed on the trade blacklist considering the security concerns. However, Huawei has denied to the allegations raised against it.

In line with this, the US Secretary of the state, Mike Pompeo is anticipated to discuss Huawei’s role in the British 5G networks with the United Kingdom Foreign Secretary- Dominic Raab, in a meeting which is likely to be held here in Washington on Thursday. Official sources report that the State would persuade UK to prohibit the use of 5G equipment by Huawei on the grounds of national data security.
